Many of the adults I see for autism evaluations aren't starting from scratch — they've been thinking about this for a while. Maybe they recognized themselves in a friend's diagnosis. Maybe they read something online that finally put words to a lifetime of feeling out of step with the people around them.
What I hear most often is some version of: "I've always known something was different about me, but I could never explain it." That feeling is valid, and it deserves a real answer.
Autism in adults — especially in women, people of color, and those who learned to mask early — is chronically under-diagnosed. Many adults have spent years with other diagnoses that never quite captured the whole story.
A diagnosis isn't a label — it's a lens. It can reframe decades of experiences and help you stop blaming yourself for things that were never your fault.
Documentation for workplace accommodations, educational support, and access to services and communities designed for autistic adults.
Many therapeutic approaches work differently for autistic people. Knowing where you stand changes what kind of help is most effective.
Autism affects people differently. The evaluation is designed to capture the full range of how autism may show up in your life — not just the stereotypical presentation.
How you navigate conversations, read social cues, form and maintain relationships, and experience social fatigue.
Sensitivity to sound, light, texture, taste, or touch. Sensory overwhelm and the strategies you use to manage it.
Comfort with routines, difficulty with unexpected changes, preference for structure.
Intense interests, deep expertise in specific areas, and how you process and organize information.
How you experience and manage emotions, including meltdowns, shutdowns, and overwhelm.
Many adults — especially women — have learned to hide autistic traits. The evaluation accounts for this.
